Why You Have Nothing to Wear

It’s a tale as old as time: standing in front of a closet full of clothes – full of dramatic despair – thinking, “I have NOTHING to wear!”
Sound familiar?
For most people, it does. Even as a personal stylist, there have been *many* times where I’ve been at a loss for what I could possibly pull out of my wardrobe that would be an acceptable outfit for the day. (I’ve always had a flair for the dramatic…just ask my husband!).
But I’m here to tell you there is a reason you feel this way. And it’s so simple it’s almost stupid:
Your wardrobe is not aligned with your daily life.
I know, I know. This seems like common sense. But sometimes it’s the simplest principles that trip us up (trust me…I still haven’t learned that getting somewhere by 4pm means I need to leave my house before 4pm 😂).
If you’re often looking at your clothes feeling frustrated, uninspired, or straight-up confused, there are a few common causes. And, fortunately, each has a solution! Let’s dive in and see where you land:
#1 - You’re a Different Person Today Than You Were When You Bought These Clothes
Our lives are dynamic: as they evolve, so do our clothing needs. Clothes that once resonated with us – and made sense for our lifestyle at the time – may no longer feel appropriate or appealing.
I’m sure this sounds sensible to you…of course the clothes you bought to party in college won’t work for your after-work networking event! But often, we’re so busy actually living life (as we should be!), that we forget to update our closets along with us.
Maybe you’ve grown your family, or taken a new job, or moved to a new climate – whatever it is, these life changes take a lot of time and energy, so it’s easy for your wardrobe to drop off as a priority.
THE FIX: Set a time for 10 minutes and flip through your clothing rack, pull out anything that no longer makes sense to wear for any aspect of your life. This includes items that simply don’t fit you well anymore. Put ‘em all in a box and revisit it tomorrow or later in the week – my guess is you’ll wonder why you kept these clothes around as long as you did! Then, make a plan to donate or sell so you can make space for what you actually need.

#2 - You’re Buying the Wrong Items
Let’s say that as your lifestyle, tastes, and preferences have shifted, you have tried to keep up by purchasing new clothes. So then why do you never reach for that pretty sundress you bought for summer brunch dates? Well…now hear me out on this…maybe, just maybe, it’s because you don’t actually go on summer brunch dates!
Too often, we buy for the life we dream of, rather than the life we have. You have no need for a summer brunch dress if you’re more of a coffee-in-the-car-before-swim-lessons type of girl. This is how you end up with too many clothes, yet nothing to wear.
THE FIX: If you desperately want to be the person that those unworn clothes reflect, it’s time to make some small changes in your everyday life that get you closer to that person (text a friend right now and schedule that brunch date…or whatever the “brunch date” is for you!).
OR — if you know deep down that some of your fantasies just don’t fit with your reality right now, let go of those clothes and the unnecessary unmet expectations that come along with ‘em. Embrace your messy, perfect life exactly how it is so you can be a more mindful shopper and only buy clothes you can actually live in.

#3 - You’re Missing the Right Items
Maybe you already have clothes that you like and can wear for your everyday activities. And yet, you’re standing in front of our closet, feeling like nothing is quite right! In this scenario, I often find there may be one of two things going on:
Problem A: You may have too much of one type of clothing, and not enough of another.
For example, maybe you have the great fitting t-shirt and the quality jeans, but you’re missing the perfect jacket to pull it all together. Likewise, maybe you have a ton of pretty skirts, yet no simple tops to pair them with. A lack of either versatile basics or distinctive statement pieces can both hinder your ability to create cohesive outfits – leaving you feeling like you have nothing to wear.
Problem B: You may have the right clothing item, but the clothing item isn’t right. (No, that’s not a riddle!)
Just as important as the type of clothing item, is the functionality of it. For example, if you live through Midwest winters, then you know that a winter jacket can’t just be any jacket – you’ll need a good, warm puffer coat, not just a light windbreaker or a satin trench. The same is true for almost any scenario. Just because you have an expensive pair of designer jeans doesn’t necessarily mean you have a pair of jeans that fits you well or pairs nicely with your existing shoe collection.
THE FIX: Take an inventory of your closet. Think about your daily activities and assess whether your current wardrobe allows you to dress for your day. Look for the gaps, so you know what items to buy (or not to buy any more of!).

#4 - You Don’t Know How to Put an Outfit Together
Sometimes, it just comes down to outfit overwhelm…
Even with a well-stocked wardrobe, assembling outfits can be daunting without a clear understanding of your individual style principles.
Think of it like this: if you’re given the highest quality and widest variety of art supplies, but a blank page, you’re still going to have a harder time starting than if you’re given a box of crayons and a coloring book.
The point is this: for most people, starting from a blank slate is much more challenging than having a little direction to go off of. This leads to frustration, and sometimes even surrender to the false perception that you have nothing suitable to wear.
THE FIX: Develop a few “outfit formulas” that are aligned with your style, flatter your shape, and are practical for your day-to-day. Think of these outfit formulas as the “base recipe” – like the perfect, go-to muffin batter. Then, your fun accessories or bold statement pieces are the “spice” – like the different berries or nuts that you can mix-in for endless variety. Your signature outfit formulas are what you wear when you have nothing to wear. 🙂
